Carole Palmer is director of CIRSS and associate professor of library and information science. Her research focuses on improving information access and use for scientists, humanities scholars, and interdisciplinary researchers. Her current projects include investigations of the impact of interoperability on representation of digital collections (DCC), institutional repository development (IMIRD), and scientific information work and collaboration (SCI)

Affiliated Faculty:

  • J. Stephen Downie has research interests that intersect with both the digital humanities and scientific communication at CIRSS and has worked recently in multimedia music information retrieval.

  • David Dubin is a research professor whose interests are in the foundations of information representation and description.

  • P. Bryan Heidorn researches scientific information extraction as well as information infrastructure to integrate scientists' data, sensor data, and citizen participation in biodiversity informatics in assoication with the Scientific Communication Initiative (SCI).

  • Allen H. Renear conducts research on formal ontologies (including metadata) in science and the humanities and is currently exploring strategies for using these ontologies to improve scientific communication and publishing.

  • Linda C. Smith, professor and associate dean, is associated with CIRSS through her work with the Scientific Communication Initiative (SCI) as Co-PI for the Digital Curation Education Program (DCEP)—a component of her larger research interest in orienting students to handle scientific information.

  • Michael Twidale's research interests in computer-supported working and collaborative technologies intersect with CIRSS research areas of collections and metadata, scientific communication, and digital humanities.

  • John M. Unsworth, dean at GSLIS, is heavily involved in the digital humanities and collections & metadata components of CIRSS as a principal investigator for the MONK, NORA, BRAIN, and ECHO DEPository projects.

  • W. John MacMullen investigates information creation and use behaviors, with a focus on biomedical information resources and services. His current work studies biocurators and the Gene Ontology.
